The use of waste heat, from an industrial process or local electrical generation, reduces transmission losses. Local biofuels can also provide an economic source of energy.

The viability of the system depends upon the heat consumed and the energy losses through the distribution pipework, which may be upto 7km in length. Any system with a loss of less than 40% is considered efficient.
